What Is This Fruit?

What Is This Fruit? For a long time now I’ve been hoping that Google will come out with a new kind of search that allows you to upload an image and it will find you pages with similar images. A search-by-image function. That way you could easily identify things in pictures by getting page results of websites that have similar pictures of those things. I’m pretty sure it would be a hard thing to program, but maybe one day.

Until that day comes I’ll just have to post pictures here and ask: Does anyone know what the hell this fruit is?

It looks like some kind of alien pod. I was scared to get closer because of my life-long fear of facehuggers.

Update: Apparently it’s a Durian. But even after reading that Wikipedia page I’m still not convinced it won’t kill me.

There’s http://www.tineye.com for reverse image searching.

I’ve heard it’s good, but stinks like rotting flesh. I haven’t worked up the courage to try it in 3.5 years. Plus, it’s expensive in Japan! How much for one in China? Might be worth it…

Google is working on it – it’s called “google goggles”. They actually have a beta version and I have the app on my droid. You can just take pictures and it searches. It’s pretty good with book covers and logos but it has a long way to go.

Wow, I’m reading about it. Apparently it works with Google Translate. Which means I could take a picture of a menu written in Chinese and Google would translate it for me. That is a miracle.

Unfortunately, I’m using the worst piece of shit Motorola brick in the world. It has an FM tuner. …

FYI, I tried this fruit and it isn’t that great. My experience was that the horrible smell and great taste were both highly exaggerated. So that’s my random feedback 5 months later.
